Why this matters

You cannot improve what you do not measure. But there is a real cost to measuring the wrong things — dashboards full of numbers that are not actually decision-grade.

A small set of metrics, read weekly, beats a wall of metrics read never. This is the small set.

02·STEPS

Step-by-step

Read these every Monday. Ten minutes, max.

  • Traffic — how many sessions did the store get last week? Is it trending up, flat, or down?
  • Conversion rate — what % of sessions became orders? (1–3% is normal for first-year stores.)
  • Orders — count + average order value. Both matter.
  • Top products — which 5 SKUs drove most revenue? Most units?
  • Refused / refunded — what % of orders did not complete? Why?
  • Customer behavior — are visitors browsing or bouncing? Top pages and exit pages tell you.

Common mistakes to avoid

    Chasing vanity metrics

    Followers, page views, and impressions feel good. They do not pay rent. Focus on revenue per visitor and repeat purchase rate.

    Comparing to the wrong benchmarks

    A new boutique should not compare conversion rate to Amazon. Compare to where you were last month, not where the market leader is.

    Reading metrics without taking action

    A metrics review that does not produce one specific change for the following week is just journaling. Pick one number; pick one action.
