Why this matters

Instagram DMs sold the first hundred orders. They will not sell the next thousand. The shift to a real store is not about leaving social behind — it is about adding the structural pieces social cannot give you: a proper checkout, product pages search engines can index, customer records that persist, and order history the business can report on.

The goal of this migration is to keep the warmth of social selling and add the structure of a real store underneath it.

02·STEPS

Step-by-step

Do this as a parallel run, not a big-bang switch.

  • List the top 20 products you sell most via DM · these are the catalog priority.
  • Build the storefront with those 20 products as the launch set — not your entire SKU list.
  • Move your most repeat customers onto the new store first · share the URL personally.
  • Keep Instagram DMs open during migration · use them to drive customers to the storefront link.
  • Track which orders come from Instagram referrals vs direct storefront traffic.
  • After 30 days, evaluate which conversations still need DM and which the storefront handles.

Common mistakes to avoid

    Big-bang switching

    Announcing "we no longer take DM orders" on day one loses the customers who built you. Run both for a quarter; transition gradually.

    Losing the conversational warmth

    A storefront that feels cold compared to your DMs is a downgrade. Bring your voice into the product descriptions and the order confirmation emails.

    No customer record export

    Customers who bought via DM exist in screenshots, not databases. Capture name + phone + last order before you migrate, even on a spreadsheet.
